The History (so far) of Terrigal Wamberal Netball Club

Terrigal Wamberal Netball Club (TWNC) was formed in 1975 as part of the Terrigal Wamberal Rugby League and Youth Club which was originally formed in 1974 as a result of a conversation between several fathers in the district at the local hotel when it was identified that the children in the Terrigal Wamberal area did not have sufficient activity in their own area. Following a successful opening of the Terrigal Wamberal Junior Rugby League Club it was decided to continue with Netball for the female children of the area.

The Club began in 1975 as part of Gosford Netball Association with 8 junior and 2 senior teams. The uniform colours followed the Rugby League with Sky Blue, Black and White and continue these colours to-day. A decision was made that as our area was by the sea, the names of all teams would reflect this by representing a fish/surf name. Again this has been continued to the present day. The first year all the uniforms and tags were homemade by mothers as part of a working bee and it was a pretty hectic time come Gosford Netball Association open day that first year. Our first President was Nolene Stockwell with our first Secretary being Kerry Woods.

As the area of Terrigal Wamberal grew, so has our Club and at one time fielding 32 teams in the Gosford Competition. As the area expanded, breakaway clubs were encouraged to be formed and were represented by OLSS (local Catholic School), Avoca Beach, Eastern Sands and Kincumber. For the past few years our Club has remained one of the larger of the Gosford Netball Association with a make up of 29 teams with 5 netta, 9 junior, 5 Intermediate Junior and 10 senior in 2008. Terrigal Wamberal colours have always been evident on Grand Final Days.

Our club currently has 5 life members who have achieved the strict criteria set by our constitution, which is to be actively involved in the Club by holding an executive position for a period of 10 years. These members are, Margaret McCreadie, Marilyn Mungovan, Marlene Stockwell, Vicky Daley and Trish Peters. Trish, Marilyn and Marlene are still actively involved with netball playing, coaching and/or umpiring while Vicky continued her involvement until 2003.

Coaching and Umpiring have always been an important part of Netball and we have had some exceptional people over the years. Gosford’s first National A badge was the late Lorraine Harrison who was from TWNC. We currently have 3 Level 1 coaches with all other coaches being required to complete their Level 0 training. We have a number of qualified umpires including National “B”, National “C” , Gosford and White award umpires and many more currently in training to achieve these goals.
